As I have said before, we all love furniture repurposing or just redoing furniture with a more up to date style – it’s so eco friendly and a green way to decorate! We regularly run the yard sale, auction and thrift store circuits searching for a diamond in the rough.
While out on a treasure hunt with mom and sisters, I happened across a super yard sale that was selling a ton of furniture. Most of the pieces had already been redone in a shabby chic style and were great pieces to take home, plop down and use immediately.
However, I like a bit more of a challenge. Finding a “once loved” piece and turning it into a “once again” loved piece is so satisfying. I found one piece that was still in its’ original shape (not counting damage from use over the years). I walked around it, walked away and ended up coming back to it. Here’s a picture:
This was after I had started sanding. I just love the lines — very mid century modern — an era I love. It is actually a record cabinet to store LP’s back in the day of LP’s. However, I thought it had potential as an end table or small entry or occasional table, so I paid the lady and headed for the van with my treasure.
Anyway, I took off the pitted brass handles and hinges and then the doors. I sanded for what seemed like forever to get some “tooth” for the paint to adhere.
I almost finished today and then the rain came so I had to pack it in. I will finish tomorrow, hopefully and get a finished photo for comparison.
I can’t wait to show you!!
UPDATE 8/25/2011 – Ran into a problem with the finish on top. The previous owner had left it out in the yard and it was rained on. It is proving to be pretty stubborn in achieving a smooth finish. I had to resort to stripping the top so it is taking a bit more time. The rest looks great! Should be ready for photos tomorrow — Friday — if all goes well. Wish me luck!
Record Cabinet to End Table Redo | Part II

Awesome find! I just bought a cabinet just like this, except the doors slide. Do you happen to know the maker or the value? This is the only similar cabinet I’ve seen so far!
Hi Lindsey! Thanks for your comment. I didn’t find any maker marks on the cabinet itself. Wish it had been marked. I sold mine in the booth for $45.95 but, knowing the maker and line if you can find out, can make the value go up! Good luck. Let me know if you find out!
